facelift

If you've checked in with Accidentals and Substantives in the last month or so, you'll know that I've been doing some redecorating around here. I've re-designed the site with 12" monitors in mind to complement my shiny new Powerbook. Every time the new banner image loads in my browser window, though, my eyes fixate on that little sliver of background color at the far right of the screen that the final thumbnail fails to cover. I've considered posting a prominent "Mind the Gap" sign so that visitors don't fall through the crack. I wish I'd been more precise calculating the size of the image layers from the outset, but numbers aren't my strong suit. As a stopgap (ahem) measure, I might try selecting a color in the thumbnail to extend the image outwards a hair, but my concern is that by correcting for notebook monitors I'll be making things worse for desktop monitors. I don't want to fuss too much more with this. Any suggestions or tricks of the trade?

Well, I have a 15" PB so there is room for at least two more of those funky squares on my screen. And at work, my monitor is HUGE. That isn't a complaint; I like the new look.

hi kari:

i have been checking in on yours and matt's blogs for some time now. enjoy reading: stimulating, thoughtful, and entertaining. not to be generic.

so anyway i have an idea:

  1. put the banner image in a div.
  2. mod the banner image to include a bunch more thumbnails (till it will work on full screen at 1600 resolution)
  3. set "overflow:hidden;" in the style def for the div

this effectively means that only the portion of the banner that will fit into the browser "viewport" will display. more space = more images, no horizontal scroll and no extra space at the right no matter how small or big the browser.

Thanks, Miriam and jrm.

Miriam, I like your blog layout so much that I went in search of your stylesheet yesterday. I particularly like the way you've styled your date header--the spacing and font--and I may try something similar.

jrm: many thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely give it a go--though probably not for several weeks as I've already squandered too much time with the redesign. A rest, and then I'll return to the templates.

Kari,

I'm pretty happy with the way mine looks, but the central column is *really* slow loading, I find. It took me so long to get three working columns that I just left it like that, but sometimes it niggles. So if you are considering three columns, you may want to look someplace else (and then let me know so that *I* can borrow from *you*).
