movable nano-beads:
"Scientists at the IBM Research Division's Zurich laboratory have built an abacus with individual molecules as beads with a diameter of less than one nanometer, one millionth of a millimeter."
If you're wondering why this wasn't slashdotted or boing-boinged, it's because the nano-abacus is already a relic: the story dates from 1996!
And while I'm thinking at the nanoscale: NanoCulture by N. Katherine Hayles was published earlier this year.
